Philosophy of Music Education
Every child is a unique and special individual with a creative mind.  The growth and development of that mind is imperative to the development of the whole child.  Through Arts Education, children can discover who they are, can explore the endless possibilities of their own creativity, and can develop means of personal expression.  Education through music is both vital and wonderful for a child.  My purpose as a music teacher is to help children discover and develop their creative minds, academically and personally, through musical experiences that they encounter in everyday life.

Choir pen pal program- MS and HS student pen pals
The MS choir students have pen pals from the HS choir.  It is just a neat program to get the kids thinking as an NM choir program, rather than individual choirs. It is also to help the HS students to mentor the MS students and to develop an added sense of school pride.

CONDUCT

The choir is an ambassador of the school it represents. Therefore, each and every choir member is expected to exemplify excellent behavior both at school and away from school, during rehearsals/class, in concerts and on trips.
Conduct During Rehearsals:
The student is expected to come to class in a spirit of cooperation, wanting to accomplish something that day, and be in their assigned seat with choir binder and pencil working on board work when the tardy bell rings.
Be ready to rehearse. Gum, candy, or food, etc. are not compatible with singing, and are not allowed in Choir Class. You may drink water during Choir Class.
Participate in the activities of the class. Have your music and binder organized and ready to go. Have your choir binder organized. Always have a sharpened pencil ready so you can make notes in your sheet music. Mark your music.
Listen to the director and the directions the first time. Listen to yourself. Listen to your section. Listen to how your part fits in with the other section/s while they are rehearsing their part.
Ask questions. When you hear people around you struggling with a part, raise your hand and ask how the part should sound. It is not necessary to point out those who are singing incorrectly.
Pay close attention to the instructions even when the director is working with another group. Many suggestions and corrections covered in one section will apply to everyone else. Also, try to follow your part to see how it fits with other sections. The choir is a team. It is not enough for you to know your part. It is the uniting of the parts that makes the song a work of art.
Exercise self-control. It is sometimes tempting in class to just sit and talk, or not participate while others do all the work. Every voice is necessary. Without every voice, the choir is not the best it can be. Great choirs are great because of consistent good rehearsals. There is little room for talking during rehearsals. The best disciplinarian in the choir is NOT the director, but each choir member who wants the choir to be the best it can be. Everyone will enjoy choir so much more if they can hear improvement, and move on to other material. The feeling of accomplishment is wonderful!!

Conduct During Concerts: Concert Etiquette
Every member of the choir must sing, focus, and pronounce together. Any movement, wandering gazes, giggling, laughing, elbowing those around you, looking at other choir members, or acknowledging people in the audience, takes attention away from the choral group.
• Enter the stage, looking straight ahead, arms at sides watching your step
• Keep your hands at your sides while performing.
• Resist the urge to adjust glasses, flip hair, scratch your nose, etc.
• Focus on the director.
• Do not respond to movement in the audience.
• Do not talk or lose your focus between songs, when the audience is applauding.
• Walk off quietly when the performance is completed.
• The audience can still hear you, even if you are offstage.
• Listen to others when they are performing.
• Do not ridicule, discredit, or criticize their performance.
• When you distract the performance of others, you are the loser.
• Do not leave during a concert.
• Encourage other performers.
• Even if you did not like what they had to offer, find something good in what they did and praise them for it.
• In a concert, it is not choir against choir or performer against performer. It is a number of fellow musicians striving to improve, and fulfill their potential.

Conduct for Trips
Trips are taken only following the approval of the administration. All school, choir and school board policies are in effect during trips. Students who violate regulations trips will be subject to disciplinary action upon return and/or may be sent home from the trip at the parent’s/guardian’s expense.
On the bus:
• Do your part to make each trip enjoyable for everyone.
• You may only play stereos with headphones attached.
• Stay seated at all times.
• Do not yell.
• Pick up all trash.
• Pay attention during announcements and roll checks.
• Keep everything inside the bus. Nothing is to be put out of the windows.
• Do not open the emergency door.
• Be polite to all adults and students, including chaperones.
• No profane language or gestures will be tolerated.
• If a choir member does not wish not to return from a trip with the choir, this will allowed only if a letter is submitted to the choir director prior to departure for the trip. Students may leave only with their own parent or guardian.
