Geometry

Geometry is a year long course that adds a third dimension to mathematics for the study of the world around us. Some students who have struggled previously with Algebra excel in Geometry and vice versa.

Each day of class bring the following:

  • Textbook
  • Sharpened pencil
  • Notebook for daily notes
  • Geo-journal (spiral notebook is fine)
  • Drawing tools

Grades:Your grade is determined by dividing the points you've earned by the total points available.
  • Tests - 100 points
  • Quizzes - ~30 points
  • Recorded Homework - 4 points each
  • Projects - To be determined
* Most of the grade is comprised of the test and quiz scores. Homework, however, is very important. Late homework will be accpted up until the chapter test but for half credit. After the test it is worth zero credit. Three zeros in amarking period will drop your grade one step (i.e., A- to a B+). You will be given the chance to retake one test and two quizzes per semester if you have all your homework in.

Prerequisites: Algebra I, preferably with a "C" average or better.

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

This a one-semester course that will introduce students to the world of computer-aided design. Technical drawings and three-dimensional modeling are essentail to construsting everything in society from the house one lives in to the computer on a desk. The curriculum is designed to promote understanding and application of general language used in technical drawings. Designing and modeling will provide a foundation for future employment or post-secondary education in many fields.
We will be using the Pro/Desktop 8 software to model our designs. Each student will be given a copy of the software to use at home or elsewhere.

Goals:

  • Awarness: To develop an appreciation for drafiting and the numerous trades where it can be used.
  • Technological Advances: To obtain a working knowledge in the fundamental principles of CAD and/or manual drafting.
  • Communication: To communicate effectively in a non-traditional classroom enviroment.
  • Independant learning: To develop independent work practices.
  • Accountability: To instill a sense of pride and responsibility for one's work.
  • Career Development: To make informed career descisions bases on experiences.

Web Design and Video Production I

This is a project-orented course designed to introduce students to the good design of a website and introduce complete production of short videos.

We begin the year learning good design principles and html code to better understand and be able to manipulate html editors. This allows students to be precise in how they want their web pages to look. Along with the html code, we will work with Phototshop, Microsoft Front Page, Java Script, and Cascading Style Sheets and possibly Flash.

Also during the first semester students learn how to use our cameras ans will be required to record two or three after-school events such as sporting events, board meetings, and concerts.

Around mid-year we begin video production in which students will learn to use and care for video and audio equipmen, how to get ideas from the mind on to paper ready to shoot, and properties of good camera work. Once the filming is done they will learn how to use linear and non-linear editing methods to polish off their work. Programs involved include Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects, and 3-D Studio Max.
